Starring : Ranbir Kapoor , Anushka Sharma , Karan Johar , Vivaan Shah , Kay Kay.
Direction : Anurag Kashyap
Plot : Bombay Velvet is set in the 1960’s and it is about a few wannabe big shots in Bombay . It is a story of love , friendship , greed and capitalism versus communalism. Johny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) is a street fighter who wants to make it big in life . A chance encounter with Kaizaad Khambaata (Karan Johar) puts him on the road to be one . Johny turns out to be one of Khambaata’s trusted henchmen who is ready to do anything for him , including kidnap , murder etc.
Rosie (Anushka Sharma) comes to Bombay with the dreams of being a singer . She is a hairdresser in the morning and a singer by night , until Jimmy Mistri ,gets her a job as a singer at Bombay Velvet Club. For Johny, it is love at first sight when he sees Rosie , but she ignores him in the beginning, when he is just another underdog trying to make it big.
Bombay Velvet is a club , that is owned by Khambatta and managed by Johnny Balraj . It is supposed to be the most happening place in Bombay , where the who’s and who’s of Bombay flock in .
Khambaata is a capitalist who wants to change the way Bombay looks , by merging the seven islands and by bringing in more development .But Jimmy Mistry, a communist journalist aka Russian tattu is against the development , since it will lead to the closure of mills and other factories , which in turn will lead to loss of jobs .
Tony(Vivaan Shah) works at Bombay Velvet and is Rosie’s driver , who also has a secret crush on her . Kay Kay plays a cop in the movie , who is investigating a murder , post interval. Chimman Choudhary (Satyadeep Misra) is Johny’s best buddy ,who helps him out in all his criminal activities.
It is Johny’s task to stop Jimmy from ruining Khambatta’s dreams. Jimmy sends Rosie into Johny’s life with a mission , and starts to blackmail her, about her past , when the mission takes time to complete. Khambata who gets to know about the mission , wants her dead. How these events unfold make the rest of the movie.
My Take : Nowadays ,when most filmmakers try to fit in their movies within the 90 – 120 minute time frame, this one stands long at 2hrs 31 mins . This movie has 15 songs , that is , one sing every 10-15 minutes . Except for two songs , the rest of the songs are picturised on Rosie’s performance . There is a song picturised on Raveena Tandon.
Ranbir Kapoor’s look bears a uncanny resemblance to Al Pacino’s Tony Montana in Scarface. He has made good use of his eyes , voice and body to portray Johny Balraj . The scene where he enacts his dream to live a rich life with Rosie is one which I found impressive . The fire in him to be a big shot is convincing.
Anushka Sharma’s lips stand out in every scene. She has less dialogues and more singing to do . Her first dialogue comes in only after 40 minutes into the movie . However she has performed well ,the transition of her confidence level from a singer in search of opportunity to an upcoming singer and then as an established singer at Bombay Velvet , has been portrayed well. Her body language as a singer is impressive as well.
Karan Johar as the antagonist is interesting to watch . Bombay Velvet is his debut movie . However,he doesn’t look like a debutante. He has portrayed the role of a capitalist with much elan .The shades of homosexuality have been portrayed well , without giving subtle hints and thus by putting the viewer in doubt about the antagonist’s orientation. His penchant towards flamboyant suits can be seen in the movie as well. I dunno if men actually wore yellow colored suits in the 1960’s.
The Bombay of the 60’s has been set well . The trams , the buildings , the black ambassador cars have given the movie a retro feeling . There is nothing extra ordinary about the story , only the premises where the story has been set is different .Bombay Velvet is a one time watch .
